THE MUSIC OF USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN

For me, UX Design is like writing a piece for a string quartet or orchestra
You’ve got multiple user audiences and multiple business audiences that you have to get working in harmony. You’ve got to get the piece written, the players hired and practiced, the performance scheduled, and then delight the audience. And if they aren’t delighted, be ready to write some more music.
Sometimes I think of it as cooking or baking. As I wrote for my business blog, full-stack UX Design is measures of Science, Art, and Engineering. If you were on the show Chopped, you can’t just be good at desserts.
Three steps to Harmony
Talk to your customers/audiences to get their goals, their pain. Strategize and adjust based on what they need, not necessarily what they say they want.
Fold in the business and brand goals. Strike the appropriate balance with the user needs based on relative priorities.
Involve engineers in the new designs, getting their buy-in. Understand how the code may limit the design or performance, either in the UI code or in the back-end.
